Two Arab authorities who spoke to the CNN Immediately after President Donald Trump’s comments on Tuesday (4) about the US took control of Gaza expressed surprise, worry and pessimism with the statement.
It was “rough, hard to understand and digest,” an authority said, adding that “they need clarity and additional development to be understood.”
A second authority, a diplomat, said the comments will endanger the fragile ceasefire agreement in Gaza and compared them to what Trump said about attaching Canada and Greenland.
“It is essential to recognize the profound implications that such proposals have in the lives and dignity of the Palestinian people, as well as in the Middle East in general,” said the diplomat.
“In addition, reality remains, 1.8 million people in Gaza would resist such an initiative and refuse to leave,” he continued. “It is unlikely that Saudi Arabia seek peace in these circumstances, and other nations can reconsider its commitments to Abraham’s agreements.”
The diplomat added that the moment of change “raises significant concerns, particularly as we strive to maintain a fragile ceasefire and negotiate a possible hostage agreement.”
“Declarations like these can inadvertently endanger the progress we have made and threaten to undo the delicate balance we are working to achieve,” they said.
On Monday (3), the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Qatar, as well as the Secretary General of PLO, sent a joint letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, calling the resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict of “The Key to Regional Peace” and saying that it can only occur through a solution of two states.
“It is imperative that Israel does not attach any Palestinian land,” says the letter, a copy of which he was seen by CNN . “Such annexation will simply make the solution of two states unfeasible,” he added.
“Palestinians don’t want to leave their land. We support your position unequivocally, ”wrote the ministers.
