Aras says that cases such as violence against the Yanomami people will not go unpunished

The Attorney General of the Republic, Augusto Aras, told the CNN who will have a “first conversation” this Friday (6th) with prosecutors from the Amazon region about cases of violence against the indigenous population, including the complaint that a Yanomami girl had been raped and killed.

“As far as I’m concerned, crimes like this will not go unpunished and will be dealt with with priority by this Attorney General. I will discuss this and other cases of violence against the indigenous population of the Amazon with the region’s prosecutors. Today will be the first conversation. I also intend to speak with members of the MPF from all the states of the Amazon,” he said.

The case of violence against a Yanomami village in Roraima gained repercussion and caused commotion throughout the region. This Thursday, Aras landed in Pará.

“I came to Pará to get a closer look at the updated reality of two problems that concern the PGR and demand our attention: environmental and indigenous issues. Pará has its own specific problems that demand our attention. It is up to the PGR to guarantee structure and personnel to support the federal prosecutors who work in cases here. But the case of the complaint that a Yanomami indigenous woman was allegedly raped and killed in another region of the Amazon caught my attention,” he told the newspaper. CNN .

This Friday, the Attorney General of the Republic appointed 30 prosecutors to take care of socio-environmental matters and investigations in the Amazon region.

Ten of these posts will be regionally assigned, five of which are destined for the Western Amazon area, which comprises the states of Amazonas, Acre, Rondônia and Roraima, and five for the Eastern Amazon, which are Amapá, Mato Grosso and Pará. The other designated attorneys will handle coordination activity.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the decision to appoint new attorneys for the region serves the protection of conservation units and the defense of the rights of indigenous peoples and traditional communities.
