Aras schedules trip to Pará to follow investigation into death of Yanomami girl

The Attorney General of the Republic, Augusto Aras, is due to go to Pará this Friday (6th) to meet with the team of prosecutors responsible for investigating the attacks on the Yanomami community, which gained national relevance after an indigenous leader’s account of a girl from the group, who was allegedly raped and killed by miners in the region.

Aras and the investigators have a meeting scheduled for 3 pm, at the headquarters of the Federal Public Ministry (MPF), in Pará.

According to team members, the matter is closely monitored, especially after the destruction of the Arakaça village, where the girl would live, in the Waikás Region, in the Yanomami Indigenous Reserve, in Roraima.

The case is investigated in a first instance inquiry by the Public Ministry and the Federal Police. In a note released this afternoon, the prosecutor’s office says it supports the investigation into “the suspicion of crimes” and the “disappearance of the community”. In the text, Aras declares that “clarifying what really happened in this case is a priority for the MPF. All measures are being taken so that not only the indigenous people, but the whole of society receive these answers”, says Augusto Aras.

The Prosecutor’s Office states that it works to guarantee the resources and measures necessary to make the investigation work possible, and points to the complexity of the work due to the remote location, difficulty of access and cultural characteristics of the ethnic group.

One of the arms of the PGR is the Chamber of Indigenous Populations and Traditional Communities, which is also monitoring the situation.

“Given the seriousness of the reports, two days after the complaint was published on social networks, a representative of the MPF participated in investigations in the territory”, says the prosecutor.
