Aras tells CNN that the agreement on Mariana’s victims “is close to a solution”

The Attorney General of the Republic, Augusto Aras, told the CNN that the agreement to repair damages to victims and the State for the rupture of the Mariana dam (MG) is close to a solution that could be announced next Tuesday (23), in Brasília, by the National Council of Justice (CNJ). There are more than 85,000 lawsuits over the tragedy.

This Friday (19) Aras participated in a meeting with Minas Gerais governor Romeu Zema (Novo), Espírito Santo government officials, the president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Luiz Fux and representatives of the mining companies Samarco, Vale and BHP Billiton, responsible for the Fundão dam.

The tragedy left 19 dead in 2015 and caused serious environmental damage to states. According to Aras, the conversation was fruitful. “We are close to finding a solution that restores the damage caused to the environment, population and states,” she told CNN .

The impasse revolves around the amount owed to families and states for damages. The deal is estimated to be worth at least R$126 billion.

Aras avoided talking about values. “We from the Public, Federal and State Ministry, because we are one, are working together with the defenders so that society has its rights guaranteed”, he pointed out.

Also participating in the meeting this Friday, the ministers of the Environment, Joaquim Leite, the Attorney General of the Union (AGU), Bruno Bianco, and the minister of the Federal Audit Court (TCU) Jorge Oliveira.
