Archaeologists that digs an old fish market in Barcelona, Spain, They discovered the wreckage of a ship that may have sunk on the coast of Catalonia about 500 years ago.

The team discovered the ruins of a large vessel, probably used in the 15th or 16th centuries. A considerable fragment of the ship, measuring ten meters long and three wide, with more than 30 curved curves, was found well preserved at a depth of 5 meters below sea level.

Santiago Palacios, 30, director of the archaeological team, said the discovery is of great importance, because VWell -preserved underwater archaeological stages are rare. He added that more details will arise as excavation advances.

“What we find out is a fragment of a ship, probably of mediterranean -style construction, but with influences from the Atlantic – probably from the Basque or Galicia country,” he said.

To ensure the preservation of the naval finding, the team needs to prevent it from drying, which means it needs to be constantly watered by day and night.

“At this time, we are in the initial phase of conservation of a piece of a wreck ship. In this first phase, we are conserving all these wood elements. Soon, they will be extracted by piece and transferred to a permanent deposit, where we will perform the rest of the process of desalination and impregnation of the wood, ”said Lana Lazaro, head of restoration and conservation of the Barcelona Archeology Center.

Delia Eguiluz, 38, added:

“One of the key factors for the preservation of the ship’s current state is to maintain the original moisture level he had when we found it, which was 100%. So we need to keep it constantly watered and, at night, we use an irrigation system to ensure that the wood remains completely soaked.”
