Archbishop of America Hopes for Ukraine: It is an independent and sovereign state, Russia’s invasion unchallenged

The Archbishop of America, Mr. Elpidoforos, described the Russian invasion of Ukraine as “unprovoked” during his visit this afternoon to the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

“I do not hide from you that I am saddened when I hear statements such as:” The two sides, the adversaries, should find each other and they are Orthodox Christian brothers and they should not quarrel. “It reminds me of a quarrel between a Ukrainian and a Russian in a Belgian square,” he said, adding: “But we are not talking about that. We are talking about an unprovoked invasion of one country into another country, an independent country, an occupation of foreign lands. Therefore, it is not exactly a matter of pacifying two people who are fighting. “Ukraine has not fought with anyone, it is an independent and sovereign state.”

Mr. Elpidoforos, asked rhetorically how similar statements would seem to the Greeks – like the ones made now, by some, on the issue of Ukraine – in the past, during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and continued: “It is you know how to read nobody a statement – go a few decades ago, the day Turkey invades Cyprus and hear like Greeks a statement like: Well, the Greeks have to deal with the Turks, it’s not right to argue. “A real dimension of what is happening in Ukraine today. We must remember what happened to Hellenism because any other approach is not fair. It is simply,” Mr. Elpidoforos continued. “I think it very accurately portrayed the real dimension of the events and what needs to be done. It’s a shame.”

The Archbishop of America was received at the rectory of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki by the rector, Nikos Papaioannou and professors of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. During the meeting, Mr. Elpidoforos recalled the excellent relations of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with the Archdiocese and the excellent cooperation with the Boston Theological Seminary. He also welcomed the fact that the Medical School has English-language teaching departments that facilitate students from America. He presented the rector with the icon of the Holy Trinity and received as a gift a painting depicting the large mural of the AUTh ceremony hall, with the theme of Byzantine Thessaloniki.

“I am glad that the Archbishop of America is returning home, and he is also a professor of Social Theology,” said Rector Papaioannou, welcoming the Archbishop of America.
