Architecture Biennale 2023, this is how we can imagine our future

The title of this new edition of the Architecture Biennale, open from 20 May to 26 November in Venice, is The Laboratory of the Future and she is the curator Lesley Lokko, writer and architect who grew up in Ghana, to explain the focus of the choice: «I believe that the true laboratory of the future is Africa. We are the world’s youngest and fastest urbanizing continent, growing at nearly 4% a year. But ours is a largely unplanned growth, which generally comes at the expense of the environment and local ecosystems». And then Lesley Lokko talks about racial equity, life expectancy, justice and inclusion: «And architects», she concludes, «are historically key players in translating images into reality».

And so it is no coincidence that this year more than half of the professionals exhibiting come from Africa or from the African diaspora, with an average age of 43 (the youngest is 24). Between Central Pavilion, the Gardens, the Arsenale and Forte Margherathe city of Venice is teeming with events, exhibitions and meetings, mostly dedicated to the theme of climate changegenerally promoting a more sustainable model for design.

The exhibition, which includes 89 participants, also sees the adhesion for the first time of Niger and Panama, while Italy, always present this time at the Tese delle Vergini in the Arsenale, has chosen as the title Spatial: Everyone belongs to everyone else.

Looking around, it is fascinating to see how most of the projects, all aimed at hypothesizing the future and at being real agents of change, require collective commitment and synergy, require a “we”.

There Architecture Biennial thus becomes a collector of stories, which make even more sense when seen together. Here, a little taste to follow.
