Are you using Google Authenticator? 6 analogues that are better in everything

The Google Authenticator branded application from the search giant is incredibly popular among users – the software is absolutely free, extremely simple and straightforward to use. And for novice users or those who do not have special requests and requirements, this is quite enough – the program certainly copes with its task by five plus. But some users still need more – and it is they who should pay attention to competing programs that provide more features, are better protected, or simply have a slightly more attractive interface.

Microsoft Authenticator

The solution from Microsoft has a rather ordinary set of functions in terms of two-factor authentication – the user can add services, open a tab to view the token and change the location of accounts on the screen. But the application has additional features – here you can add addresses, payment cards and passwords that are important to you. For example, if you have a lot of credit cards and you don’t want to carry them with you, but sometimes you need all the information, including the date, CVV and number, then all this can be stored in one application, along with the necessary passwords and shipping addresses.

✅ Benefits:

  • signing in to a Microsoft account from the app;
  • separate storage for passwords;
  • the ability to store payment card data;
  • built-in database for important addresses.

❌ Disadvantages:

  • not detected.

2FA Authenticator

The application is extremely simple and convenient – for example, when adding a new service to the list (both manually and using a QR code), the user can select the appropriate icon to visually quickly find the desired token in the list. There is also synchronization of tokens between devices using Google Drive – just connect your email so that all data is synchronized between devices. And, of course, you can put a pin code on the application or protect your information with Face ID or a fingerprint. Nothing out of the ordinary, just the essentials.

✅ Benefits:

  • synchronization between devices;
  • service icon in the token;
  • simple and concise interface.

❌ Disadvantages:

  • there are no unique features or features.

📲 Download on Google Play.

Aegis Authenticator

The process of adding a service to the application list is quite simple, but then the user opens up many ways for customization. For example, you can download any icon to a service token (from smartphone files or download a whole pack of icons), plus tokens can be grouped for greater convenience, sorted by name or frequency of use. In addition, the token can be displayed only by clicking (so that no one can see it), there is a flexible security setting, as well as the ability to export all downloaded services to a file for transfer to another gadget.

✅ Benefits:

  • the ability to download icons for tokens;
  • sorting content by type and frequency of use;
  • flexible security settings;
  • groups of tokens.

❌ Disadvantages:

  • too poor appearance settings;
  • there is no automatic synchronization between devices.

LastPass Authenticator

The creators of the application allow the user to connect the profile to the LastPass cloud, so that on a new device or if the current one is lost, it will always be possible to restore all the necessary information. Naturally, the menu with a list of tokens has many sorting options and a quick search. But the developers decided to stop there – there are no additional settings, customization of the plate with the token or anything else in the application. You literally can only add services, use tokens for authorization and store everything in the cloud. All the basic set of functions is there, but nothing more.

✅ Benefits:

  • the ability to store backups in the cloud;
  • sorting tokens in the list.

❌ Disadvantages:

  • there is no customization or settings.

Twilio Authenticator

A very attractive application in terms of graphics, which allows you to quickly find the token that the user needs by icons and immediately copy it for authorization. It is always possible to keep a backup in case the smartphone is lost or the application is accidentally deleted with all the data (it is highly recommended to store this backup not only on the smartphone), plus you can synchronize data between several devices. The function, of course, is very convenient (the list of connected devices in this kind of software is very rare), but otherwise the developers decided not to introduce anything incredible.

✅ Benefits:

  • you can save a backup of data;
  • synchronization between devices;
  • clear service icons for tokens.

❌ Disadvantages:

  • not detected.

Yandex.Key

The application from Yandex allows you to receive tokens for accessing certain popular services (added both by QR code and manually), but there are also some interesting features for fans of the company’s projects. For example, there is a function to create one-time passwords for entering mail or another Yandex service – this is a very convenient feature for active users of the ecosystem. Additionally, you can create a backup copy of your data so as not to lose all the information in case of problems with your smartphone, set up application protection using a pin code or fingerprint.

✅ Benefits:

  • one-time passwords for Yandex services;
  • you can back up your data.

❌ Disadvantages:

  • adding third-party services manually is not very convenient.
