Area is war zone, Israel responds to Reuters finding that its forces killed journalist in Lebanon

The incident occurred in an active war zone and is under investigation, the Israeli military responded today in a Reuters investigation that concluded Israeli forces killed a journalist of the international news agency in southern Lebanon on October 13.

Without directly referring to Issam Abdullah’s death, an Israeli military statement said Lebanese Hezbollah fighters had launched an attack along the border when the incident occurred, and Israeli soldiers opened fire to prevent a possible infiltration by gunmen.

“On October 13, 2023, the terrorist organization Hezbollah carried out an attack on multiple targets inside Israeli territory along the Lebanese border,” the Lebanese Defense Forces said in a statement. Israel (IDF).

One incident involves the launch of an anti-tank missile, which hit the border fence near the village of Hanita. After the launch of the anti-tank missile there were concerns about the possible infiltration of terrorists into Israeli territory.

“In response, the IDF used artillery and tanks to prevent the infiltration.”

The IDF is aware of the claim that a journalist who was in the area was killed.

“The area is an active war zone, where real fire is fired and being in that area is dangerous. The incident is currently under investigation,” the statement said. A Reuters investigation found that the Israeli tank crew killed Abdullah and wounded six other journalists with two shells fired one after the other as the journalists filmed the cross-border shelling.

The two strikes killed Abdullah, 37, and seriously wounded AFP photographer Christina Assi, 28, just over a kilometer from the Israeli border near the Lebanese village of Alma al-Chaab.
