Areas affected by flooding are already monitored, says SP Fire Department spokesperson

The spokesperson for the São Paulo Fire Department, Captain André Elias, declared, this Sunday (30), in an interview with CNN, that areas affected by flooding in the state are already monitored in advance.

“Overall, these areas are monitored, including by the Civil Defense, which carries out continuous monitoring work, together with other bodies such as the IPT [Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas]. These are areas previously classified as at risk, in which residents are advised to leave them in the event of rain or water accumulating on the ground”, says André Elias.

The heavy rains that hit São Paulo this Sunday caused at least 24 deaths in the following cities:

  • Franco da Rocha: 8
  • Francisco Morato: 4
  • Embu das Artes: 3
  • Várzea Paulista: 5
  • Aruja: 1
  • Ribeirão Preto: 1
  • Jaú: 1
  • Death in an unidentified location: 1

Colonel Fauzi Katibe, director of Civil Defense in São Paulo, tells the CNN, which, due to the rains on consecutive days, the soil is very wet and conducive to further flooding and landslides. He recommends that the authorities be contacted by the population.

“The guideline is that those people who live in risk areas look for the municipal civil defenses, or call the emergency bodies, Military Police 190, Fire Department 193 and Civil Defense 199”, explains Katibe.

“The Civil Defense of the state provides a service where citizens can register through the number 40199, and with the CEP [Código de Endereçamento Postal] from the location he sends, he receives updates on the risk areas”, adds André Elias.
