Argentina: 200 bags with remains and hundreds of coffins are found in cemetery sheds

The City of La Plata, in the province of Buenos Aires, reported this Wednesday (21) that it is investigating the discovery of 200 bags with human remains and more than 500 abandoned coffins in the La Plata cemetery, called “Protectora”.

The complaint was presented to the tax unit responsible for investigating possible crimes in these incidents, the authority said in a statement.

The bags and coffins were found in four warehouses in the cemetery that “were not morgues nor were they intended for the conservation of corpses or human bone remains”, detailed the City of La Plata in the statement.

The four warehouses “were in a very poor state of conservation and cleanliness, with nauseating odors, stagnant water, collapsed drawers and even skulls,” he added.

In the second of the four deposits, called the “watch room”, 200 black bags with human remains were found, “many without identification, niche or cadastral location”, he stated. 15 wooden coffins were also located in the same space.

Likewise, in the third deposit hundreds of adult coffins and 22 corresponding to children were found, as “they were identified as 'little angels'”.

The remaining abandoned coffins were found in deposits one and four.

La Plata authorities and the Provincial Directorate of Missing Persons Registry of the Buenos Aires Ministry of Security made these conclusions after La Plata Mayor Julio Alak ordered audits of several bodies “to ensure the transparency of municipal administration,” as mentioned in a statement.

From the cemetery, according to another statement from the municipality, Alak said that a record will be made of coffins and skeletal remains that are not identified.

“Once completed, we will seek to implement a burial program for the remains, taking into account the dignity inherent in them due to the condition of human beings that they were,” stated the City of La Plata.

Furthermore, the authority added that it will hand over to the Public Prosecutor's Office all the necessary elements to “clarify the facts and responsibilities of the case”.

Regarding the contents of the coffins, the Government of La Plata commented that what is inside has not yet been determined, because they were found closed. However, he said that the bags with human remains “are typical of people who were buried”.

“Within this framework, exhaustive work will begin in each deposit, separating the drawers to find specific information that will allow procedures to be carried out to establish the original burial place. Once this process is complete, the remains will be reinterred,” he declared.

The registration of coffins and remains and the burial program will be led by Alejandro Incháurregui, specialist in Forensic Anthropology, founder of the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team and current director of the Registry of Missing Persons in the province of Buenos Aires.
