Argentina and Colombia try to repair ties after Milei, on CNN, called Petro a “terrorist murderer”

Argentina and Colombia say they have taken “concrete measures” to improve frayed relations between the two countries.

This comes after far-right Argentine leader Javier Milei called his left-wing Colombian counterpart Gustavo Petro a “terrorist murderer” in an interview with CNN .

In a joint statement on Sunday, the two countries' foreign ministries said they held talks under the orders of Milei and Petro.

“The respective governments have taken concrete steps to overcome any differences and strengthen this relationship,” the joint statement said.

The measures include the return of both countries' respective ambassadors after Colombia last week expelled all Argentine diplomats from Bogotá following Milei's comments to CNN .

“You can’t expect much from someone who was a terrorist killer,” Milei said in the interview about Petro, a former guerrilla fighter who became Colombia’s first left-wing president in 2022.

Colombia recalled its ambassador to Argentina in January following similar comments from Milei, Reuters reported.

Milei has clashed with regional leaders since taking power last year with a pledge to implement shock economic reforms.

In his extensive interview with CNN which aired on Sunday, Milei also called Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador “ignorant.”

López Obrador had previously criticized Milei's policies and compared him to a dictator.

On Thursday, in a post on social media, López Obrador reacted, asking himself why Argentines “voted for someone who is wrong, who despises the people”.

Argentina last week accused Venezuela of cutting off electricity supplies to its embassy in Caracas, after the diplomatic mission organized a meeting with the country's opposition leaders.

Tensions have been rising between Buenos Aires and Caracas after Venezuela's socialist president, Nicolás Maduro, criticized Milei's electoral victory in November last year, claiming that the “neo-Nazi far right” had gained power in Argentina.
