Javier Milei's government announced this Tuesday (12) the opening of imports of several basic basket items. The measure was announced after a meeting with representatives of supermarket chains. The objective, according to Argentine government sources who reported to CNN is to encourage competition to lower the price of products in the country.
Among the main products that will be allowed into the country are: bananas, potatoes, pork, coffee, tuna, insecticides, shampoo and diapers.
In the meeting between the Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo, and businesspeople from supermarket chains, “they recognized the increase in prices above inflation expectations” because “the scenario that businesspeople predicted was catastrophic, something that did not happen”, explained the door -voice of the presidency, Manuel Adorni.
“We believe that the economy will gradually return to normal. That’s why we took the decision to definitively open imports of certain basic food products,” said Adorni.
Government sources told CNN that there will be a reduction in the payment period for imports of food, beverages, personal hygiene products, among others.
The Value Added Tax (Argentine VAT), in turn, will be suspended for 120 days by the government not only for food items in the basic food basket, but also for medicines, “to help correct the prices of these products and accelerate normalization”.
According to the Ministry of Economy, the opening of imports “will stimulate the import of products from the basic basket whose price in the local market is higher than the international one, which will contribute to greater competition and, consequently, a drop in inflation and price levels of these products.”
