The Government of Argentina said that it requested the international community to arrest Iran's Interior Minister, Ahmad Vahidi, whom it points to as one of those allegedly responsible for the attack against the Argentine Mutual Israelite Association (AMIA) in 1994.
The Argentine Foreign Ministry said in a statement that, at its request, Interpol issued a red flag for Vahidi's arrest.
A CNN contacted Interpol to confirm the information and is awaiting a response.
For the Argentine Foreign Ministry, Vahidi is one of the people responsible for the attack on AMIA. The attack occurred in 1994, causing the death of 85 people and leaving another 300 injured.
A CNN is seeking the response from the minister and also from the Iranian government.
In turn, Israel's Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, responded this Wednesday (24) on his X account, formerly Twitter, to Argentina's announcement.
“Thank you to President Milei and Chancellor Diana Mondino for the request to issue a warrant for his arrest for the attack against the Jewish community,” he wrote. “A call that strengthens Jewish communities and families of victims and sends a clear message: the free world is determined to stop the Iranian terrorist regime and Khamenei.”
The Argentine government's request for Vahidi's arrest comes two weeks after Argentina's Federal Chamber of Criminal Cassation determined that the extremist group Hezbollah was responsible for the attack on AMIA and that it acted with directives and funding from the Government of Iran.
The Iranian government rejected this decision last week, pointing out through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs that the Argentine court's decision is “a clumsy measure devoid of any legal and judicial basis” and “an attempt to create another diversion in the course of the investigation to discover the truth.”
A CNN is making efforts to contact Minister Vahidi and the government of Iran to know their reaction.
