Argentina considers leaving the Paris Agreement, source tells CNN

The Government of the President of Argentina, Javier Milei, is considering withdrawing from the Paris Agreement, informed CNN a source from the Communications area of the Executive Branch.

Earlier this week, the country had already withdrawn the technical team participating in the COP29 climate summit in Azerbaijan.

Argentina’s chancellor, Gerardo Werthein, assured in statements to The New York Times that the country is “reevaluating” its position in all the climate agreements to which it is a party and the Paris agreement “has many elements” with which the government of Milei disagrees.

THE CNN reached out to the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs team for comment but has not yet received a response.

The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty on climate change, adopted by 196 countries in 2015, which aims to keep “the increase in global average temperature to well below two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and limit carbon emissions ”.

Milei has spoken out several times against the effects of climate change.

During his speech before the United Nations Assembly, Milei accused the organization of wanting to “impose an ideological agenda” and sought to differentiate itself from the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The assessment of Argentina’s possible exit from the Paris Agreement is announced in the same week that President Javier Milei managed to meet with the President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump.

In 2017, Donald Trump announced the United States’ withdrawal from the Paris Agreement during his first presidency, a promise he had made during his first presidential campaign and whose formal journey began in 2019.

At that time, Trump asked himself: “How degraded is the United States? At what point do they start laughing at us as a country? “We no longer want other countries and other leaders to laugh at us.”

“I was elected by the citizens of Pittsburgh,” Trump said, “not by Paris.”

In 2021, Joe Biden, who defeated Trump in the 2020 presidential election, brought the United States back into the Paris Agreement.

On Thursday (14), at a gala party at the America First Institute, in Mar – a – Lago, Milei showered Trump with praise.

“I want to congratulate the president-elect for his resounding victory and for the greatest political comeback in history, facing the entire establishment and even putting his own life at risk,” declared the Argentine leader.

Meanwhile, Trump congratulated Milei on her management. “The work you did is incredible”, he greeted, and adapted his well-known motto (Make America great again), to “Make Argentina great again”.
