Argentina denounces arrest of embassy employee supervised by Brazil in Venezuela

The Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported, this Friday (13), the arrest of a worker at its embassy in Venezuela. The representation has been under Brazilian supervision since August, when Nicolás Maduro’s government expelled Javier Milei’s diplomatic corps from Caracas.

Without specifying the identity of the “local worker” at the embassy, where he was allegedly arrested and the circumstances of the arrest, the Argentine Foreign Ministry published a statement in which it stated that the episode is a “flagrant and unacceptable violation of international norms that guarantee the inviolability of diplomatic headquarters and the protection of their personnel, including those performing essential functions.”

The Argentine government also stated that the arrest is part of a “permanent campaign of torment, intimidation and psychological violence” against the six Venezuelan opponents sheltered in the embassy and the workers there.

The statement from the Argentine Foreign Ministry refers to members of opposition leader María Corina Machado’s team who have been taking refuge in the Argentine embassy since March, when an arrest warrant was issued against them for their alleged participation in plans to generate instability in Venezuela.

The Argentine government also denounces the presence of snipers in front of the diplomatic headquarters and the illegal occupation of neighboring houses, creating a siege “with the clear objective of exerting pressure and generating a climate of terror” on the people inside the embassy.

THE CNN contacted the Venezuelan government to confirm the arrest and obtain comments, and is awaiting feedback. THE CNN also contacted Itamaraty about the case and is awaiting a response.

Asylees at the Argentine embassy

For weeks, asylum seekers have denounced the presence of government security agents outside the diplomatic residence, who were preventing the entry of drinking water and, on some occasions, food.

A source related to the Argentine embassy in Caracas reported to CNN that some food delivery people were stopped by security agents, searched and told that they were helping terrorists. She also states that asylum seekers are rationing water and electricity from the generator used to maintain food.

In September, the Maduro government attempted to revoke authorization for Brazil to guard the Argentine embassy, claiming it had “evidence” that the facility was being used to plan “terrorist activities” and “assassination attempts” against Maduro and his vice president. -president Delcy Rodríguez.

The Itamaraty responded, however, that it would only stop representing Argentine interests in Venezuela when the foreign ministries of Javier Milei and Maduro reached an agreement to designate a new nation for the task, which never happened.
