In this episode, Américo Martins and Camila Olivo talk about important political movements in three South American countries: Ecuador, Argentina and Paraguay.
In Ecuador, the brutal murder of Fernando Villavicencio, a candidate openly critical of corruption, shocked the country ahead of presidential and legislative elections to be held on Sunday (20). “There is a fear that many people will not vote, due to the panic installed in Ecuadorian society” in the midst of an “absurd escalation of violence in a country taken over by drug traffickers,” said Américo Martins.
In Argentina, the ultra-rightist Javier Milei, despite having ranked 1st in the primary elections, points to fraud in the electoral system. “This type of extremist politician, especially from the right and excessively libertarian, talks more than he can deliver and greatly encourages conspiracy theories”, pointed out the senior analyst.
Finally, the president of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, took office on Tuesday (15) with the presence of president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Reporter Marina Demori, who was in the capital Asunción, described the meeting of the two leaders as an important nod by the PT party to good relations with a right-wing conservative.
Also listen: the phone call between the President of the United States, Joe Biden, and President Lula; Ukraine war updates; Saudi Arabia and Sportswashing and the Taliban’s two-year mark in power in Afghanistan.
