Argentina has entered the “fourth wave” of the new coronavirus pandemic, Health Minister Carla Vicotti said on Monday, commenting on the data on the increase of SARS-CoV-2 cases by 92% within a week, but without this accompanied by an increase in the so-called “hard” indicators of the pandemic, ie hospital admissions and deaths due to COVID-19.
“Today we are entering a fourth wave”, but “this wave finds us in a completely different situation” than the previous ones, the minister stressed during the meeting of the federal health council with her counterparts in Newken (southern ).
The most recent report – now announced on a weekly basis – spoke on Sunday of 33,989 cases, up 92% from the previous week’s 17,646 and almost 200% compared to the previous three weeks.
However, thanks to the various health measures and the progress of the immunization campaign, “we do not have an increase in deaths, nor of people being treated in intensive care units” and this is exactly “our goal”, the minister stressed.
Last week, 47 patients succumbed to complications from COVID-19, up from 76 the previous day. At the same time, the occupancy rate of ICU beds remains under control (at 41%).
Therefore “we can move on to this new stage of the pandemic” without the need for restrictive measures, added Ms. Vitsoti, who ruled out the possibility of imposing a lockdown due to the 4th wave. “There is no possibility of new closures,” he assured.
According to the official death toll, Argentina, with a population of 45 million, has recorded 128,776 deaths due to COVID-19 out of a total of 9,135,308 SARS-CoV-2 confirmed infections.
The country, which was hit hard when the pandemic began, enforced particularly restrictive measures, in particular a five-month lockdown, which was one of the most severe in the world. On the contrary, it did not take such measures at the end of 2021, when the pandemic flared up again, in order not to cause suffocation in the economy that was recovering, based on the good course of the immunization campaign.
Now almost 83% of the population has received a full vaccination regimen (two doses), while 49% have received souvenirs.
