Argentine Economy Minister Sergio Massa said this week, in an interview with local radio, that the government is preparing a price stabilization plan to freeze the prices of products most consumed by the population, such as food, beverages and hygiene and cleaning. The information is from the Argentine newspaper Clarin.
The change would be valid, according to the minister, for four months, from December to March 2023.
The minister also said that citizens will be able to consult the price of products and report companies that do not follow the rule through an application, in which it will be possible to scan the barcode of the item that does not have its price frozen.
Argentina is going through one of the most delicate economic moments in its recent history, with inflation reaching 83% in the last 12 months. The country, which already recorded record levels of inflation last year, above 50% in 12 months, was in a worse situation after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The price freeze strategy is not new in the country, being widely used in previous governments, including the former liberal president Mauricio Macri.
