Argentina: Record of more than 40,000 coronavirus cases and 26 deaths in 24 hours

Argentina on Wednesday recorded the highest number of cases of the new coronavirus since the outbreak of the pandemic in its territory.

The Ministry of Health announced that 42,032 infections from SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed in the previous 24 hours.

The previous record (41,080 infections) was set in May.

During the same period, another 26 patients died due to complications of COVID-19.

“We are recording a very high level of transmission (…). In the federal capital and in the wider Buenos Aires, the situation is serious,” said epidemiologist Rodrigo Salemi on an Argentine television network.

Argentina, with a population of 45 million, has 117,111 deaths due to COVID-19 complications out of a total of 5,556,239 SARS-CoV-2 cases. In proportion to its population, it has one of the highest mortality rates in the world, as do other countries in the Latin American region, particularly Peru.
