Argentina: Spectacular increase in new cases

Argentina is experiencing a new acceleration of the new coronavirus pandemic, as the Ministry of Health announced yesterday Tuesday that in the previous 24 hours almost 34,000 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed, a number increased by 10,000 from the previous one and six times more than a week earlier. however, the head of state rules out, at least for the time being, the imposition of new restrictive measures.

The 33,902 cases announced yesterday are the highest number from the most recent wave of the pandemic, in the period May-June. The 20,200 cases reported a day earlier were already signaling a return to July levels. By mid-November, infections confirmed on a daily basis had stabilized at just over a thousand.

Twenty more patients died from complications of COVID-19.

The bed occupancy rate in the intensive care unit (ICU) is 34% nationwide.

President Alberto Fernandez at this stage ruled out new restrictive measures, recalling that the state of emergency, in other words the legal framework that allows the government to impose such measures, was recently extended for one year, until December 31, 2022.

“We are all concerned about the wave of infections, but” if the problem is not so serious, it is because the Argentine people have shown responsibility and been vaccinated, “he told the press. However, at this stage, no measures will be taken again that “have already been institutionalized”, added the center-left Peronist.

From January 1, the health pass for all over 13 years old in Argentina will come into force throughout the country. It will be a prerequisite for full vaccination for the participation of any person in mass gatherings, even outdoors, as well as in cultural, sports, religious activities indoors.

The Minister of Health, Carla Vitsotti, assured yesterday Monday that “of course there is concern and no one underestimates the situation”, but she seemed to relate the problem as the health system is not facing, at least for now, so much pressure: she reminded that at the peak of the previous wave that hit the country “we had almost 8,000 people intubated, while now from 800 to 900” (892, according to the latest figures).

The ministry did not provide any information on the Omicron variant impact index, the first case of which was confirmed on October 6th.

Since the pandemic broke out in its territory, Argentina has counted 5.5 million cases of the virus (out of a total population of 45 million) and 117,000 deaths due to complications of the disease it causes. To date, 73% of the population has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
