Argentina to request arrest warrant for Maduro at International Criminal Court

Argentina said on Friday (6) that it will ask the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue arrest warrants against Nicolás Maduro and other members of the Venezuelan government.

According to Javier Milei’s chancellery, the request will be presented next Monday (9).

The Argentine government’s statement states that the evidence collected in the ICC investigation and the episodes following the July 28 elections “are sufficient to consider the merit of issuing the arrest warrants.”

The Argentine government indicated that the measure will be taken “in view of the worsening situation” in Venezuela and the “commission of new acts that could be considered crimes against humanity.”

In July, Argentina rejoined an investigation launched by the Criminal Court in 2018, after having withdrawn the request in 2021.

Uruguay calls for investigation

This Friday, the Uruguayan government also reported that it had sent the Court a request to investigate possible crimes against humanity in Venezuela and, if they are confirmed, “that urgent measures be taken to guarantee respect for and protection of human rights that are under threat.”

“The Uruguayan government’s decision is based on the worsening repression against the civilian population and opposition political leaders at the hands of the regime’s security services after the electoral fraud of July 28, and in view of the lack of constitutional and judicial guarantees in a country without independent powers,” the country’s Foreign Ministry reported.
