Argentina: Twenty-one injured by intercity train derailment

An intercity train in Argentina derailed near the eastern city of Olavaria, injuring at least 21 people, local authorities said today.

Video footage shows the passenger train with several wagons derailed, some falling to the side, in the fields in a rural area of the South American country.

“So far, 21 passengers have been treated at the hospital,” Olavaria Mayor Ezekiel Gagi wrote on Twitter, adding that five were children who had just been discharged and that a 40-year-old passenger had suffered head injuries.

He said that all the injured have minor injuries and are receiving medical care.

“The other passengers were taken to the Olavaria Municipal Exhibition Center (CEMO) where they will receive proper care until they can start their journey again,” Gagi added.

Trenos Argentinos, the state-owned company that manages the country’s railway network, confirmed the crash in a statement on Twitter, saying the causes were not yet known and were being investigated.
