The Argentine Congress voted in favor of a bill to increase pensions on Thursday, despite strong reactions from the government of liberal President Javier Miley, who argues that the move will threaten the country’s fiscal surplus. The Senate, controlled by the opposition, approved the retirement reform with 52 votes in favor and four abstentions. The House of Representatives had earlier voted in favor of the bill. President Miley has announced that he will veto pensions, as he had done last year. Since taking up his duties, he has cut public spending cuts in an effort to tackle inflation, but his austerity policy has also hit workers. Pensioners often demonstrate in the capital Buenos Aires demanding increases and in many cases have clashed with police forces. Source: RES
