The decision to recall its ambassador to Argentina was taken by Colombia, after the president Javier Millay called his Colombian counterpart Gustavo Petro a “communist murderer”.
In an interview granted to journalist Patricia Haniot, its president Argentinian he called Petros a “communist murderer who is destroying Colombia.” The journalist shared the interview on her YouTube channel.
Her Foreign Ministry Colombia issued a statement describing Javier Millay's comments as “rude and irresponsible”, underlining that they “violate the strong ties of friendship, understanding and cooperation that historically unite Colombia and Argentina”.
After the election of the ultra-liberal Millay to the presidency, relations between Argentina and Colombia deteriorated, where in August 2022 a left-wing president was sworn in for the first time.
“They attack us as communists, as socialists, (claiming) that the state wants to control the means of production. Of course, those who attack us have no idea what communism is, what socialism is”, President Gustavo Petro told Colombian government officials, referring to Millay's comments. The Colombian government wants the people to control the means of production, not the state, he added.
