The Argentine Embassy in Venezuela informed the authorities in Caracas on Wednesday (21) that the money it had in its bank account was stolen, according to what it told CNN a source with knowledge of the case.
Once the theft was detected, the diplomatic representation asked the bank for explanations and formalized the complaint, the source added. He said that the amount extracted was US$90,000.
THE CNN requested information from the Venezuelan Attorney General’s Office on the matter.
The event comes at a time when relations between the governments of the two countries are tense. Argentine President Javier Milei and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro have traded accusations and insults in recent months, especially after the July 28 presidential elections in Venezuela.
In addition to withdrawing his diplomatic corps from Buenos Aires, Maduro ordered the departure of the Argentine Embassy in Caracas as part of a retaliation against seven Latin American countries that questioned the victory that the National Electoral Council of Venezuela granted to the Venezuelan president.
The Argentine Embassy in Caracas is also receiving asylum seekers from six Venezuelan dissidents who intend to leave the country.
The Government of Argentina has requested the Government of Venezuela for the corresponding safe-conduct passes, which have not yet been issued. Brazil is responsible for guarding the Argentine Embassy and those opposing forces.
In a joint statement published last Friday, 22 countries and the European Union insisted on this request for Venezuela to allow these people to leave Venezuelan territory.
