Argentina’s Minister of Justice, Mariano Cúneo Libarola, announced on Friday (24) that Javier Milei’s government will eliminate the crime of femicide from the country’s Penal Code.
“We are going to eliminate the term feminicide from the Argentine Penal Code. Because this government defends equality before the law enshrined in our National Constitution. No life is worth more than another”, he wrote on his official profile on X.
The Minister of Justice’s announcement comes two days after Milei mentioned in her speech at the Davos forum that “radical feminism is a distortion of the concept of equality”.
“We have even gone so far as to normalize that in many supposedly civilized countries, if someone kills a woman, it is called ‘femicide’ and carries a more severe penalty than if someone kills a man because of the victim’s sex. Legalizing, in effect, that a woman’s life is worth more than a man’s,” he claimed.
The Argentine People’s Ombudsman’s Office recorded around 252 femicides between January 1st and November 15th last year (the date on which the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is marked).
The report states that 66% of victims were murdered at home, while in 84% of cases it was possible to prove a previous relationship with the attacker.
THE CNN requested comments from the Argentine feminist organization “Ni una Menos” about their reaction to the announcement, but has not yet received a response.
