A member of the Buenos Aires city parliament has introduced a bill that proposes using blockchain to distribute social assistance to citizens.
Dario Nieto believes that the technology should be introduced into the payroll management system to improve it. According to the Argentine MP, this will effectively eliminate the types of businesses that, for a fee, offer clients assistance in obtaining preferential programs, or political organizations that offer citizens to become volunteers in exchange for benefits:
“The management of social transfers has long been a tool in the hands of various political and social movements, where they are used to manipulate people.”
Blockchain, says Nieto, will make the system more transparent and easily verifiable by eliminating intermediaries. Thus, the money allocated by the Ministry of Social Development will go directly to those in need.
Previously, Nieto suggested using blockchain to control government procurement and contracts, in order to also make the process more transparent and reduce corruption. Now Buenos Aires is considered one of the most advanced cities in South America, which uses blockchain in many infrastructure projects, such as maritime logistics or the tax system.
Earlier, the Buenos Aires authorities announced plans to launch Ethereum nodes, which will help regulators to better understand the principle of the blockchain and develop rules for regulating digital currencies.
