Argentine tourist who was shot after mistakenly entering Rio favela dies

Argentine tourist Gastón Burlón, who was shot when he mistakenly entered a favela in Rio de Janeiro, died this Monday (13), after more than a month in hospital. The case happened on December 12th of last year.

Burlón, who was Secretary of Tourism for the city of Bariloche, mistakenly entered one of the locations in the Rio Comprido neighborhood, in Rio de Janeiro, and had been taken to the Souza Aguiar Municipal Hospital. His health condition was very serious.

In a statement, the Bariloche Chamber of Tourism mourned his death and said that Gastón “was a committed and visionary leader, whose work contributed significantly to those who had the privilege of knowing him and working alongside him.”

The Rio court ordered the arrest of the suspect who shot the Argentine, identified as Sandro da Silva Vicente, but he remains at large.

Four other accomplices, identified as Cláudio Augusto dos Santos, Jiló; Tiago de Oliveira, the TG; Raphael Corrêa Pontes, De Lara and another unidentified person also had their arrest requested by the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro, but according to the judge in the case “there is not enough evidence of their authorship”.

Previously, the judge on duty, Orlando Eliazaro Feitosa, did not order the arrest of the suspect after concluding that there was no “qualified urgency” that would justify “the need for intervention by the Court on duty”.

According to witnesses, two individuals with pistols approached the vehicle and, before the car stopped, one of the suspects shot the victim.
