Argentines’ disinterest shows weakening of democracy, says political scientist

In an interview with CNN this Saturday (12), political scientist Eduardo Viola assessed that a large portion of the Argentine population is not interested in politics, and that this demonstrates a weakening of the country’s democracy.

“The polls in Argentina are very unreliable, because you have the vast majority of the exhausted population, who are not interested in politics anymore and may not vote or vote for anyone. This shows a strong weakening of Argentine democracy”.

Argentines go to the polls this Sunday (13) to decide who will be the candidates in the general elections of October 22, which includes the post of president and vice president.

Regarding the current government, Viola understands that the Peronist government was a “total failure”, and that the estimate is that 2023 will mark the “worst election in the history of Peronism”.

“That Peronist government was a total failure. This year the forecast is that inflation will reach 140% to 150% by the end of the year, and at the moment it is at 118%, and, in addition, you have the increase in the population below the poverty level, which represents almost half of the population,” he said.

“All analysts estimate that this will be the worst election in the history of Peronism,” he added.

Viola analyzed that Argentina has been experiencing a decline since the 1970s, and that the country is on the “brink of an economic collapse”.

“That [alta da inflação e da população abaixo da pobreza] it shows very well the decline of Argentina, which is a continuous decline that comes particularly since the 1970s. What happens is that Argentina is permanently on the verge of an economic collapse”
