Argentines of various religions and origins gathered on Monday (21) to pray for Pope Francis in some of the churches where he prayed and worked.
In Buenos Aires, Father José Luis Carbajal celebrated the Mass in the church of San José de Flores, where Jorge Bergoglio – how Francis was known before becoming Pope – began his priestly vocation.
“There is the confessional where he finishes confirming his priestly vocation,” Carbajal told reporters in the church. “I have these memories, you know? They kill me, because it’s as if it is important without you. It made you feel important, valued, dear, beloved.”
At Buenos Aires Cathedral, where Francis was Archbishop, both Catholics and non -religious residents talked about what the Pontiff, an Argentine compatriot, meant to them.
“For me, he represents a leader who goes beyond religion,” said Hugo, a resident of Buenos Aires. “Although it was religious and had its duties, I consider it a admirable person. I see him more as a person than a Pope, perhaps because I am not very religious.”
Paula, who is a Christian, told the CNN that he felt immensely proud that Francis represents his country and his faith.
“Well, like Argentina, it’s really a pride, and as a Christian as well. His reach reaches everyone, all people, in fact. So one more among us,” she said.
Paula and Hugo did not report surnames.

The Pope’s body will be placed in a coffin later this Monday (21).
