“Wicked” director Jon M. Chu confirmed that Ariana Grande will sing live in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical.
“These are live vocals. We were filming and the girls said: 'Screw the pre-recordings, we're going live'”, said Chu in an interview with Variety, also mentioning actress Cynthia Erivo, who will star in the film alongside the singer.
“There will be a lot of wind in the studio tunnels, ok?” asked the director. “Yes, that's what we do”, added the stars.
The film, which will be divided into two parts, is an adaptation of the famous Broadway musical, which is a story that precedes the narrative of “The Wizard of Oz”. The work tells an alternative version of events in Oz before Dorothy's arrival and explores the story of how Elphaba becomes the Wicked Witch of the West.
According to theater news website Broadway World, “Wicked” is one of the most commercially successful musicals of all time, grossing $14.8 million at the Broadway box office last year alone.
Jeff Goldblum, Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey and Bowen Yang also star in the film.
“Wicked: Part 1” will hit theaters on November 27th. “Wicked: Part 2” will arrive in late 2025.
