The Arizona man arrested for shooting at the Democratic National Committee office in suburban Phoenix on three separate occasions has been indicted on one count of terrorism, state authorities said Wednesday.
Prosecutors have charged Jeffrey Michael Kelly, 60, with shooting at the DNC office in Tempe, Arizona, shortly after midnight on three occasions between September 16 and October 6.
The shots caused no injuries, but they highlight the risk of political violence ahead of the US elections next Tuesday.
In a statement, the Maricopa County district attorney’s office said a grand jury had indicted Kelly on Monday on one count of terrorism and several counts of illegal discharge of a firearm.
The office said Kelly fired more than 20 rounds during the three incidents, with shots damaging windows, doors and walls of the building.
Tempe Police Chief Kenneth McCoy said last week that Kelly had also been observed putting up anti-Democrat signs in the area. Kelly was arrested Oct. 22, McCoy said.
More than 120 guns, 250,000 rounds of ammunition and a grenade launcher were found in Kelly’s home, the New York Times reported, citing a prosecutor during a court hearing. The newspaper reported that authorities believe Kelly planned to commit “an act that would cause mass casualties.”
