Armed Forces will provide support in fighting fires in the Pantanal and Amazon

The Armed Forces will act to combat fires in the Pantanal and the Amazon. The biomes suffer from extreme drought and the spread of fires.

The increase in fires led the government to announce a situation room to monitor the issue last week.

In the first meeting with secretaries from various ministries this Monday (17), the departments presented demands for equipment, aircraft, vessels and logistics, among others, to expand operations in the Pantanal.

In this first stage, the Ministry of Defense stated that the military will participate by sending equipment and helping to transport brigade members. Access to isolated regions is one of the difficulties in fighting fire in the Pantanal.

The ministries also discussed actions to hold those responsible for criminal fires accountable, in supporting and supplying the impacted population.

The Pantanal is concentrated in the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. In the case of the biome, the dry period, known as low water because of the drop in river levels, began in the first half of the year, which is unusual.

In 2020, the strong drought burned more than 30% of the Pantanal.

The next situation room meeting should be next Monday (24) to discuss actions to combat the drought in the Amazon.
