Armenia: Russian military helicopter shot down, two dead

As war in Nagorno-Karabakh continues to rage, a Russian military helicopter was shot down over Armenia on Monday. In the attack, which took place not far from the border with Azerbaijan, “two crew members were killed and another was evacuated with moderate injuries,” the Russian Defense Ministry said.

“The Mi-24 helicopter came under fire from the ground of a portable air defense system,” he added. The aircraft was hit around 1:30 p.m. PST while accompanying a column of vehicles from a Russian military base in Armenia, not far from the border with an autonomous region of Azerbaijan, according to the ministry. The helicopter flew over the surroundings of the Armenian village of Eraskh, neighboring Nakhichevan, an autonomous Azerbaijani territory separated from the rest of Azerbaijan by the territory of Armenia.

“The command of the Russian military base 102 is investigating to determine the origin of the fire on the helicopter,” the ministry said. The Armenian Ministry of Emergency Situations has announced that it has deployed aid to the site.

A conflict outside Moscow

Armenian separatists and Azerbaijani forces have been fighting since the end of September for control of Nagorno Karabakh, a separatist region supported by Armenia and which has escaped Azerbaijani control since the 1990s.

Neither Moscow nor Yerevan immediately established a link between these clashes and the shooting at the helicopter. Russia, Armenia’s military ally, also has good relations with Azerbaijan. She has hinted in the past that she would only intervene in the Karabakh conflict if it goes outside the region, while repeatedly calling for a ceasefire.
