Army has already rescued more than 60 thousand people from floods in RS, says commander

In an interview with CNN on Thursday night (9), the Army commander, General Tomás Paiva, detailed the work of military teams in the regions affected by the floods in Rio Grande do Sul.

The official stated that the Army is engaged in a war operation, with more than 20,000 soldiers involved so far. According to Paiva, more than 60 thousand people have already been rescued in areas affected by heavy rains.

“We are still at the stage where the priority is to rescue people, save lives,” he said.

Fighting fake news

The commander lamented the spread of false news about the work of the Armed Forces, highlighting that this saddens the soldiers involved in the operations, many of them from Rio Grande do Sul who had to leave their own families to assist in the rescue.

“It gets to a point, I understand that people are desperate, but I don’t think there can be that kind of exploitation. Correct information is essential for trust to be reestablished,” she declared.

Next steps

Paiva highlighted that, after the initial rescue phase, the next steps will involve logistical support for homeless people and the reopening of roads, requiring the mobilization of public authorities in all spheres.

“Certainly, not only the forces, but the public authorities in general will have to mobilize to do this as soon as possible and faster, because this is necessary so that we do not have any problems in serving the population”, he concluded. .
