The Civil Police arrested, this Tuesday (25), a Flamengo fan suspected of throwing the glass bottle that hit the neck and killed Gabriela Anelli, 23, from Palmeiras.
Jonathan Messias dos Santos Silva, 33 years old, was located in Campo Grande, Rio de Janeiro. The teams reached him after an investigative work done with the help of technology.
In a press conference, the State Department of Homicide and Personal Protection (DHPP) stated that Jonathan Messias is the man with a beard and a gray shirt who appears in a video throwing the bottle through the space between the fences that separated the two fans during the fight, at Allianz Parque, in São Paulo.
“The images show the moment he picks up the bottle from the ground, throws it and then leaves,” said delegate Antonio Carlos Desgualdo.
Then, Jonathan would have changed his clothes and only then entered the stadium. “It is at this point that he is identified by facial recognition,” he added.
To reach this conclusion, the investigation made a timeline with the collected videos and compared audio and sound.
“At that location, he’s the only one throwing the bottle. He even listens. The images were synchronized with the sounds. From there, we identify when he arrives, when he leaves and when he returns. We were also able to exclude the other possibilities”, completed the delegate Ivalda Aleixo, head of the DHPP.
The arrest took place in Campo Grande, Rio de Janeiro. The suspect was sleeping when the police arrived and should be brought to São Paulo later this Tuesday.
He will undergo a corpus delicti examination and custody hearing on Wednesday (26), and then be taken to a prison.
His defense spoke about the arrest, in a note sent to CNN.
“Until now, we still haven’t had access to all the information from the investigation, only basic information regarding the arrest. I just checked Jonathan’s condition, he’s ok, very calm. He intends to collaborate with the investigations, the clarification of the facts. From here, he will go to the custody hearing and then will be taken to São Paulo. There he will be heard and will participate in the necessary steps to clarify the inquiry and we will be following up”, said Caroline Dias, the arrested fan’s lawyer.
Thiago Huber and Renan Bohus, defense of the first man to be arrested on suspicion of the case, and who was released days later, also commented on the new arrest: “Leonardo’s defense reiterates the version provided by him from the beginning, that is, that he did not throw any bottle or object that could hurt someone. Believing in his innocence from the start, we continue in pursuit of truth and justice.”
The suspect arrested this Tuesday, Jonathan Messias Santos da Silva, is 33 years old, is a teacher, married and has a son.
