Italian police today made 25 arrests of members of the Calabrian mafia and people allegedly working with organized crime in Lower Italy. Those arrested are accused of drug and arms trafficking, usury, money laundering and trying to influence a series of electoral contests. The aim of this illegal action was, among others, to secure government contracts and to strengthen the mafia family Tripodi, originally from Calabria. The Catholic nun Anna Donnelly was also put under house arrest, who allegedly favored contacts between imprisoned mobsters and their accomplices, who were outside prisons. The operation led to the confiscation of 1.8 billion euros, while the whole affair also involved politicians who had previously been elected to the local government of northern Italy with the League and Brothers of Italy parties.
