Arrests of US border immigrants fell 71%, says agency

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) seized more than 8,000 illegal immigrants trying to cross the Mexico border in February.

The number marked a new low compared to the previous month and February last year, according to the data.

The CBP said its field of field operations seized 8,347 people last month. To contextualize, this is a 71% drop from January, when the agency said it had seized approximately 29,000 immigrants.

The data also represents a 94% drop compared to February 2024, when more than 140,000 people were seized, according to a CBP statement.

The agency said President Donald Trump and Internal Security Secretary Kristi Noem, “have sent a clear message: If you cross the border illegally, it will be deported without the opportunity to try another day or in a few hours,” a statement.

“As a result, CBP meetings with illegal foreigners have dramatically decreased,” he said.

In addition to the southern border of the US, Customs said it “dramatically increased the active patrols of our international borders” with the support of the Department of Defense.
