Arrhythmia that made Sergio Agüero retire could indicate serious heart problems

In this Wednesday (15th) edition of the Medical Correspondent chart, of the New Day, cardiologist Stephanie Rizk talked about cardiac arrhythmia, a condition that made Sergio Agüero, Barcelona forward and who played in three World Cups for the Argentina team, end his career prematurely, at age 33.

Two months ago, “Kun” Agüero, then recently hired by the Catalan club, needed to receive assistance on the field during a match in the Spanish championship, against Alavés. The center forward was replaced and sent to a hospital with severe chest pain and dizziness. At the time, his removal was announced for three months. “It’s a very difficult time, it’s the worst decision I’ve made in my life. It’s a health problem, it’s the best decision for me,” said the Argentine at a press conference today.

Stephanie Rizk unraveled the arrhythmia and its causative factors, in addition to the functioning of the heart. The organ, which has its own electrical system, has a specific beating rhythm, with an average of 60 to 100 palpitations per minute. In abnormal cases, the beat is out of step and the average palpitation is less than 60 or more than 100.

She stressed, however, that the average below 60 is not necessarily a synonym for the disease. “Many patients sometimes have a baseline frequency below 60, especially athletes. This does not always mean arrhythmia.”

The doctor pointed out that the symptoms exhibited by Sergio Agüero are among the most traditional for the condition. The causes, on the other hand, can vary. Heart disease – such as in the valves, muscles or heart vessels – anxiety and stress, thyroid disorders and excessive consumption of alcohol and drugs are some of the main known villains.

“The arrhythmia may just be a scare, but it could indicate a serious heart condition. When you have a structural disease – sometimes a heart muscle that is sick – you need to go after it. [de assistência médica]. When there is an arrhythmia, especially if it’s an uglier one, which we call ‘malignant’, you have to look for a cause, a heart disease,” he explained.

The treatments indicated for the frame are also varied. Among the possibilities are the removal of triggering factors such as stress and alcohol consumption.

In the case of Agüero, the cardiologist assessed that the most likely cause is linked to the electrical system, which can be treated with medication or the procedure known as ‘ablation’, which burns the beams that send stimuli out of the way.

Rizk said that anyone is able to develop the condition, including people with a profile similar to that of Agüero, an athlete with only 33 years, and warned about prevention. “Of course, age groups will bring different causes. In younger patients, they are most often benign causes. Older patients, who have more arrhythmia, are cardiac problems”, he concluded.
