Arrivals in tourism are gaining ground

By Vicky Kourlimbini

This year’s season has started with the best omens and the “gap” in arrivals has already begun to close compared to 2019, the record year for Greek tourism. The aim is to increase the number of visits from abroad to the performance recorded before the outbreak of the pandemic, and to do the same with tourism revenues. It is recalled that in 2019 we had over 30 million visits and more than 18 billion euros in receipts.

The latest data from the Civil Aviation Authority for the four months confirm the good “leg” for the tourist season.

The “distance” is reduced

The flights at the country’s airports amounted to 89,690, of which 50,059 were domestic and 39,631 international, showing an increase of 103%, compared to the corresponding period of 2021 when 44,185 flights were operated. In April, the total number of passengers amounted to 3,591,241, showing an increase of 555.2% compared to the corresponding period of 2021 where 548,102 passengers had been handled.

In the total passenger traffic (traffic of departures and arrivals) which was 3,745,671 in April 2019, now for the same period examined there is a drop of 4.1%. Regarding the arrivals of passenger flights abroad, in April 2019 it was 1,380,543, now for the same period there is a decrease of 5.9%.

At the same time, airlines and major tour operators are increasing the available seats to Greek destinations. These are important markets for Greek tourism such as Germany, England, France, Israel and the Nordic countries. Also, TUI this year doubles its airline flights to Greece, the German Der Touristik, which also represents the Nordic countries, records a significant increase, Condor operates flights to Athens after 25 years, while the French market is already asking from our country travel packages for October and November.

High traffic throughout May

According to the data presented in the recovery tracker of the Institute of the Hellenic Tourism Business Association, with data from the travel data measurement company OAG for May, the week from 16 to 22 May have been planned 531 thousand air seats, while the last week of the month another 608 thousand seats on incoming international flights, the largest number since the beginning of the season. In total, more than two million positions are planned for May.
