Art Basel is back! Is it worth going there?

Art is back! at least in Switzerland. Art Basel «the queen» of art fairs reopened in attendance this 24th September 2021 after the digital editions during the pandemic and – against the expectations of many professionals – the art lovers (Swiss yes, but from all over the world, as usual) accepted the invitation with enthusiasm.

Certainly, some mechanisms have changed: penalty green passes, mandatory masks in the interior spaces, tickets only in digital format (thanks to a special app).

The preview for collectors was sold out.

«I have been coming to Art Basel for ten years e I’ve never seen such a crowded morning preview: the galleries themselves confirm that they have received great interest, at least in the initial phase. My impression? The art world is celebrating the fact that, with the right caution, the freedom to move, travel and enjoy live art is back. Walking around the stands is a pleasure: the collectors are there, and they’re here to shop “, he explains to us on the phone. Nel-Olivia Waga, Swiss entrepreneur and influencer, signed by Forbes.

And in fact, looking at the number of galleries, one can say that they are practically all back: there are the big-ones like Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth, Lisson. The Italian team is also fed: Raffaella Cortese exhibits the works of Jessica Stockholder, Lia Rummto present, among other things, Ettore Spalletti, Continuous Gallery showcases various jewels (such as the works of Nari Wald) and two gentlemen of art such as Massimo Minini and Massimo De Carlo they have set up interesting stands.

But if you don’t have a Swiss franc-sized portfolio Is it worth taking a trip to Art Basel? The atmosphere is always elegant and on the wall you will find a parade of the great names of the twentieth century: the inevitable Picasso, the always good Klee, an unusual Basquiat (the figures? Negotiations almost always confidential).

We discuss – and not a little – of NFT, digital works of art that are changing the balance of the market and then there is always some contemporary artist who attracts more attention than others. A charcoal drawing by the American and activist Kara Walker it is worth a quarter of a million dollars but know that at the Kunstmuseum of the city, with 26 francs, you will be able to see one of his very rich exhibitions. If you prefer the Impressionists, the same museum also features a focus on Camille Pissarro.

Basel, crossed by the Rhine always in full flow, with its outdoor cafes and the inhabitants who still linger outside in the evening, is worth a special visit at this time of year: Art Basel (24-26 September) brings the panache of art to many city squares and for those who love real goodies just take tram number 6 and go just outside the center, in the quiet suburb of Riehen where the Beyeler Foundation has just opened a very interesting exhibition on female talent and offers a “photo opportunity” in front of a pond with water lilies worthy of the best Monet, as well as a restaurant and an outdoor bistro, overlooking the hills overlooking France and Germany, both bordering a few kilometers.
