South Florida art dealer of USA sentenced to two years and three months in a federal detention center for counterfeiting fraud works of art by Andy Warhol.
Daniel Eli Bouaziz, 69, was sentenced in federal court in Fort Pierce, according to court records. He pleaded guilty in February to money laundering, while prosecutors agreed to drop another 16 charges related to fraud and embezzlement. It was imposed on Bouaziz $15,000 fine and a restitution hearing is scheduled for Aug. 16.
Prosecutors said Bouaziz, owner of Danieli Fine Art and Galerie Danieli in Palm Beach County, sold fake artwork to a customer in October 2021, including paintings purportedly created by Warhol. He also sold fake paintings by Roy Lichtenstein, Keith Haring and Henri Matisse. Bouaziz told the customer that the paintingswhich he sold at prices ranging from $75,000 to $240,000were authentic, original and that some were signed by the artists themselves, according to investigators.
The customer gave to Bouaziz $200,000 down payment which was deposited into his account and then the rest of the money was transferred to other accounts, reports APE-MPE.
The artworks were reproductions purchased online auctions.
