Artificial intelligence finished painting by Rembrandt “Night Watch”

For the first time in 300 years, the famous painting by Rembrandt “Performance by the Rifle Company of Captain Frans Banning Kok and Lieutenant Willem van Ruutenbürg” is shown again in its original size.

Rembrandt finished work on a large canvas, commonly called The Night Watch, in 1642. The painting, now considered one of the greatest masterpieces of the Dutch Golden Age, was cropped on all four sides in 1715 during the move to a new room, where the painting would otherwise not fit. Although these strips have not been found, there is a copy made by Gerrit Lundens around 1655. Now restorers and AI specialists have used it to recreate the missing pieces while maintaining the Rembrandt style.

The central figure in the painting, Captain Frans Bannink Kock, is now more off-center, which makes the work more dynamic. On the right, a part of the drummer’s figure has been restored. Added three figures on the left, which are not very detailed and are onlookers, not members of the militia. Rembrandt included them in the composition to direct the viewer’s attention to the central part.

For the restoration, “Night Watch” and the copy, which, by the way, is much smaller in size, were photographed, after which the specialists adjusted the dimensions and corrected the work of Lundens in order to more accurately combine the figures and other objects. Next, the artificial intelligence software tried to reproduce the style and colors of Rembrandt, and people evaluated the degree of similarity.

According to the restorers, in the future it is possible to create a better version, since the technologies are constantly being improved.
