Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday that a recent Pentagon assessment that Russia lost 50% of its tanks in the Ukrainian war “more or less corresponds to reality”.
In an interview with the international anchor chief of CNN Christiane Amanpour, on Wednesday, Zelensky said that Russia had suffered an “impressive” number of military and artillery losses.
On Tuesday, Colin Kahl, the Pentagon’s Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, told reporters that Russia will emerge from the war “weaker than when it started”, having “probably lost half of its main battle tanks in the entire Russian army”. ”. Kahl also pointed to the fact that Russia has “mired over 80% of its ground force in Ukraine” and exhausted most of its precision-guided weapons in Ukraine.
When asked by Amanpour if the Pentagon’s numbers matched the Ukraine count, Zelensky replied: “I think this more or less corresponds to reality – although frankly speaking, no one knows the full reality, especially as far as personnel are concerned.”
Zelensky said he estimated that Russia suffered “10 times” more losses than Ukraine, adding that while he could not provide exact figures, there was “a very significant difference” between the losses suffered by the two countries.
He also said Ukraine’s reluctance to throw men away as “cannon fodder” is another reason it has not suffered as many casualties as Russia.
“Whenever we ask our partners for artillery or armored vehicles, it’s not just about weapons, but first and foremost protection for our military,” added Zelensky.
The Ukrainian leader highlighted the fact that the artillery provided to Ukraine by the United States and Europe managed to help “break” the Russian military offensive.
“We detained them, we vacated a large part of our territory. And that was actually helped by artillery and new technologies,” emphasized Zelensky.
