As a result of a joint operation by Europol, Interpol, the US FBI, the French National Gendarmerie and the National Police of Ukraine, ransomware operators were arrested.
How
indicated on the Europol website, law enforcement officers arrested two ransomware operators. Their main victims were industrial groups in North America and the European Union. With the help of malware, hackers stole confidential data of companies and demanded from them a large ransom from 5 to 70 million euros for unlocking files. The criminals threatened to “drain” the stolen data into the darknet if their demands were not met.
Thanks to the joint efforts of Europol, Interpol and law enforcement agencies of Ukraine, France and the United States, the attackers were found. During the search, the police managed to seize $ 375,000 in cash from the criminals, two cars worth 217,000 euros, and also freeze cryptocurrencies in the amount of $ 1.3 million.
Recall that this year there were two major attacks on the Colonial Pipeline fuel system, which paid the hackers a ransom of $ 5 million, and the world’s largest meat supplier JBS Holdings, which gave the hackers $ 11 million in bitcoins. After these high-profile hacker attacks, the fight against phishing and ransomware has become one of the top priorities for international law enforcement agencies.
In July, the US government created a task force to investigate attacks and combat hackers, and to strengthen the internal defenses of victims affected by their actions.
