As food prices rise, UK inflation tops 10%

Inflation in the UK hit a new 40-year record in July, surpassing the 10% mark for the first time since 1982 and making it difficult for families already struggling to pay their bills to pay.

Annual consumer price inflation hit 10.1% last month, according to data published by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) on Wednesday, down from 9.4% in June.

Rising food prices – 12.7% since July 2021 – was the biggest contributor to the acceleration of inflation, the ONS reported.

The released index was higher than most economists had predicted, and food inflation is now at its highest level in 14 years.

“All eleven classes of food and non-alcoholic beverages contributed to the change in the annual inflation rate, where prices generally rose this year but fell a year ago,” the ONS said.

The biggest upward contributions came from breads and cereals, and from milk, cheese and eggs, highlighted by price increases in cheddar cheese and yogurts.
