962: Emperor Otto I of Germany and Pope John XII co-sign the Diploma Ottonianum, recognizing John as ruler of Rome.

1322: The central tower of Ely Cathedral falls.

1542: Catherine Howard, fifth wife of Henry VIII, is beheaded. Two other men, posing as her lovers, will meet the same fate.

1633: The Italian astronomer Galileo (Galileo Galilei) arrives in Rome to be tried before the Inquisition, accused of his belief that the Earth revolves around the Sun.

1689: William III and Mary II are declared co-rulers of England.

1867: Johann Strauss’ iconic waltz, “The Blue Danube,” premieres in Vienna.

1881: The first issue of the feminist newspaper La Citoyenne is published in Paris.

1894: The French Limière brothers patent the “cinema”, a device that doubles as a machine for capturing and projecting images.

1914: The Great Powers decide that the islands of the Eastern Aegean will be awarded to Greece if it withdraws from Northern Epirus. The reactions that break out in Epirus provoke the intervention of the Prime Minister, Eleftherios Venizelos, who declares that any resistance on the part of the Greek or Epirus people will have bad consequences for the country and the region.

1924: The tomb of the king of ancient Egypt, Tutankhamun (1350 BC), is opened by the archaeologist, Howard Carter. The findings inside, among them the golden sarcophagus with his mummified body, gave valuable information about the ancient Egyptian culture.

1931: New Delhi becomes the capital of India.

1937: A letter by Giorgos Seferis about the vernacular language is published in Nea Grammata.

[1945: During World War II, the Allied forces launch a massive air attack against German forces in Dresden, the capital of Saxony. 80% of the city is completely destroyed by the bombings, while the dead are estimated between 25,000-35,000.

1957: At 12 noon everything goes dead in Greece. In this way, the Greek people decide to protest against the attitude of Britain, but also of other countries, on the Cyprus Issue. Church bells and alarm sirens give the signal.

1960: France conducts a successful nuclear test codenamed “Blue Gerbil” and becomes the fourth country to possess nuclear weapons.

1970: The automaker General Motors announces that it is designing engines that will use unleaded gasoline.

1975: Seven months after their invasion of Cyprus, the Turkish Cypriots declare the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus.

1991: During the Gulf War, the Americans hit an underground Baghdad bunker with two “smart bombs”. Hundreds of Iraqi civilians, including many children, die in horrific ways. The US claims that, according to its intelligence, it was a military installation.

2001: Earthquake in El Salvador kills 255 people.

2020: Aggregate the César film awards committee resigns following the controversial multiple Academy nominations of Roman Polanski’s An Officer and a Spy, which received 12 César nominations, more than any other film this year.
