40 BC.: The passage of Halley’s Comet is recorded for the first time.

1085: Alfonso VI of Castile takes back Toledo from the Moors.

1738: Pennsylvania and Maryland sign a treaty settling their border dispute and providing for an exchange of prisoners.

1809: In the city of Tsukisaka (present-day Sucre) a revolution breaks out against the Spanish Empire, sparking the Latin American wars of independence.

1810: Citizens of Buenos Aires begin the Argentine War of Independence.

1834: Theodoros Kolokotronis and Dimitrios Plapoutas are sentenced to death during the Bavarian rule. They had been accused of plotting against the regency. Judges Georgios Tercetis and Anastasios Polyzoidis vote in favor of their discharge. Their sentence will be converted into imprisonment and they will be released as soon as Othon comes of age, in May 1835.

1895: Oscar Wilde is sentenced to two years in prison for sodomy. His romantic choices and especially his – forbidden in Great Britain at that time – homosexuality, caused a special sensation.

1895: The Republic of Taiwan is founded.

1911: In Mexico, Emiliano Zapata starts a revolution.

1925: The “Trial of the Monkeys” begins in the USA. John Scopes is convicted for teaching Darwin’s Theory of Evolution at school.

1932: The famous Disney cartoon Dippy Dog, better known as Goofy, makes his debut. Anthropomorphic dog and close friend of Mickey Mouse. Free-spirited, joker, open-hearted, a knight with the ladies, innocent like a child, a bit chaotic, but loyal and always ready to help his friends.

1935: Legendary sprinter and jumper Jesse Owens breaks six world records in one hour. Among other things, he becomes the first jumper to break 8 meters in the long jump, with a performance of 8.13 m.

1938: The bombing of Alicante kills 313 people, during the Spanish Civil War.

1940: The Germans occupy the port of Boulogne. The surrender of the last French and British troops marks the end of the battle of the same name.

1942: Aris Velouhiotis forms the first armed group of EAM.

1953: The United States of America conducts the first nuclear artillery test in Nevada.

1964: Panathinaikos defeats Olympiakos 1-0 in the Karaiskaki stadium and wins the Greek championship undefeated.

1973: The destroyer “Arrow II” captained by Nikos Pappa leaves a NATO exercise. He, 6 officers and 25 non-commissioned officers are seeking political asylum in Italy. This move (Movement of the Navy) is a blow to the junta, as it internationalizes the Greek problem.

1977: George Lucas’ Star Wars premieres in theaters.

1980: Kastoria wins the Greek Cup, defeating Iraklis 5-2 in the final.

1991: For the first time a German leader, Helmut Kohl, is attending Chania to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Crete.

2011: In the footsteps of the Spaniards, who demonstrated for days and by the thousands in the central square of Madrid, a Greek group of outraged citizens is being created, which under the name “Outraged at the Constitution” invites everyone via Facebook to a peaceful demonstration in the square outside the parliament. People of all ages, genders and political views are protesting against harsh austerity measures.

2017: A bomb explodes in the car of Loukas Papadimos, at the junction of Marni and 3rd of September streets. The former prime minister is injured and taken to Evangelismos hospital.

2020: The African American George Floyd dies in Minneapolis, Minnesota at age 46 when police officer Derek Chauvin keeps his knee on the right side of his neck for 8 minutes and 45 seconds during his arrest and while he is handcuffed and head bound on the ground. This is followed by massive protests in the US and around the world as the Black Lives Matter movement.

2022: Russian cruise missile attack destroys a shopping center and several houses in the city of Zaporizhia.
