As soon? The town of Bérchules in Spain celebrates the new year in August

In December 1994, a blackout prevented the inhabitants of Bérchules, Spain, from receiving the New Year (1995) as they should. The power outage lasted for so many hours that some businesses had to close, public events were canceled and some people chose to go to bed early.

Given what happened, the mayor and businessmen decided to postpone the celebration for another time, choosing August 3 as the ideal date.

The authorities chose the month of August as a precaution, since it is already summer, when there is more light. This decreases the likelihood that parties will be canceled due to power failures.

The New Year in Bérchules is celebrated with music, dance and food. In addition, you can see the three Wise Men walking through the streets of the town, costume contests are held and, of course, the 12 chimes at midnight are heard.

Contrary to what many would believe, the event has been well received by the locals, making the small date change a tradition to celebrate every August 3.

Currently, the Berchulera Association for New Year’s Eve in August is in charge of organizing the event, which has become an incredible tourist attraction.
